Food scientists Brian Sheldon and Paul Dawson have written a fun and innovative new book called Did You Just Eat That? Two Scientists Explore Double-Dipping, the Five-Second Rule, and Other Food Myths in the Lab. It questions (in gruesome scientific detail) the gross-out factor of spa water with cucumbers, electric hand dryers, blowing out the candles on a birthday cake, double-dipping your chips, and the microbe-content of restaurant menus, among other small terrors. Colorfully illustrated with infographics, charts, and other images, this book and its authors take you into their labs to show you everything you ever wanted to know (and a number of things you didn’t) about food science and the five-second rule. Sheldon is professor emeritus in food microbiology at North Carolina State University, and Dawson is a professor at Clemson University.
