Faith, Family, and a Passion for People

The Myrtie Davis Fund Honors Long-Time Volunteer

myrtie and bill 1Myrtie Davis received a most unique gift this Christmas.  Surrounded by her husband, three children, and nine grandchildren, she opened a letter announcing a new permanent fund at the Senior Services Foundation, established by her family in her honor.  The Myrtie Davis Fund will support the Meals-on-Wheels program at Senior Services, a program with which Myrtie has been volunteering for more than forty-five years.

What drives Myrtie Davis?  The answer is simple: faith, family, and a passion for people.  She is particularly drawn to the young and old.  Born and raised in Greenville, North Carolina, Myrtie has called Winston-Salem home for more than fifty years.  She attended Salem College, then UNC, and began teaching second grade at Sedge Garden Elementary School.  She now spends much time visiting with seniors, reading in schools, going on mission trips, participating in church activities, volunteering and, of course, delivering Meals-on-Wheels.

Myrtie first started delivering Meals-on-Wheels more than forty-five years ago.  Her passion palpable, she often took her three children with her oIMG_3517
n routes.  Her oldest son, now forty-seven, was with her delivering meals when he was just three years old.  Myrtie continues that tradition with her grandchildren and children of friends.  For Myrtie, time spent delivering Meals-on-Wheels offers an opportunity to connect and provide genuine love and care to
seniors in the community.  She doesn’t just deliver food, she lets them know they are loved.

Husband Bill notes, “When Myrtie commits to something, she’s all in!”  While she is very involved in the community, her time with Meals-on-Wheels marks her longest tenured volunteer activity.  Bill adds, “She loves Senior Services and especially Meals-on-Wheels. I don’t think she’ll stop…she’ll just keep delivering as long as she is able.”

Her family established the fund to help provide meals for those in need far into the future, even when Myrtie no longer can, a legacy that is very important to her.

Senior Services is honored to administer this new permanent fund.  If you would like to make a contribution to Senior Services, visit seniorservices.inc.org or call Patty Mead at 336-725-0907.
