Q: I am the primary caregiver of my husband who has dementia, and I need to have surgery. Is there anyone that can help us for a short period of time while I recover?
A: The Family Caregiver Support Program offers a caregiver short-term respite. Eligible family caregivers are:

  • a caregiver of any age providing care for an older adult age 60 or older or providing care for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or related brain disorder; or
  • a caregiver (who is not the birth or adoptive parent), age 55 or older, raising a related child age 18 and under or an adult with a disability; and
  • the recipient must be a resident of Forsyth County.

For more information about this program call 336.721.6914.

Q: I am the primary caregiver of my mother who has multiple medical needs and is bed bound. Is there anywhere my mother can stay for a week while I go out of town?
A: Many local nursing homes offer weekly respite depending on bed availability.  Neither Medicare nor Medicaid pays for a short term respite stay in a long term care facility.  Please contact the nursing home admissions coordinator regarding bed availability, fees, and necessary paperwork. Please note the facility will need information from your mother’s physician.
