Q: What are my options for housekeeping?
A: There are a few private-pay options: hire a professional cleaning agency; hire a home care agency; or hire an individual. You can contact Help Line to get a list of home care agencies and private sitters. Seniors and their families can also contact the Department of Social Services to get on the waiting list for the department’s In-Home Aide Program, which is the only publicly funded program for housekeeping.
Q: How can I be sure that the individual I want to hire to clean my home is trustworthy?
A: There are risks in hiring private individuals without going through a formal agency. A best practice, before hiring anyone, though, is to interview three or more individuals and conduct background checks on each.
