Q: What are my options for housekeeping?
A:
There are a few private-pay options: hire a professional cleaning agency; hire a home care agency; or hire an individual. You can contact Help Line to get a list of home care agencies and private sitters. Seniors and their families can also contact the Department of Social Services to get on the waiting list for the department’s In-Home Aide Program, which is the only publicly funded program for housekeeping.

Q: How can I be sure that the individual I want to hire to clean my home is trustworthy?
A:
There are risks in hiring private individuals without going through a formal agency.  A best practice, before hiring anyone, though, is to interview three or more individuals and conduct background checks on each. Hourly rates and specific tasks should be determined and agreed upon as a prerequisite to hiring. For a full list of questions and tips in hiring an individual (or agency), please contact Help Line.
